The clown at your child’s birthday party, a stadium rock concert, your friends fighting over the last potato chip—all are forms of Entertainment. Entertaining comes from the old French entretenir, to hold together or support. Later, the word came to mean amuse or distract. Today, we use the word to describe all sorts of activities that involve performance: theater, dance, comedy shows, music, and visual art.
